Recognized in June 2011 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the serial site “The Longobards in Italy, Places of Power, 568 – 774 A.D.”, it joined the ranks of the world's most authoritative Cultural Heritage sites on the World Heritage List. In January 2014, the National Geographic Society recognized the Sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo (the Cave of Saint Michael) as one of the most beautiful caves in the world; specifically, the Michaelic Cave was ranked eighth in the world's top ten compiled by the scientific organization. It is the only Italian cave to be included in the top ten list. Furthermore, centuries of history have bestowed various sites of interest upon Monte Sant’Angelo, most notably the characteristic medieval core of Junno, the Norman-Swabian Castle standing just steps from Hotel Relais dei Normanni, and the Pulsano Abbey with its hermitages.
